From citation to document: Search help (Search strategies)

For different kinds of documents we offer you the following tips:

General procedures


Citation/Document type Example Typical characteristics Search strategy
Bibliographies Bibliogr. Scient. Natur. Helv. 66, 1990, Nr. 1688 Bibliographies usually carry the word Bibliogr. in the title. The name of the country, the number of the entry and the year are usually placed near this abbreviation. No authors are specified. Search in CLICAPS (journals or text books) with corresponding subject.
Company reports Merck AG Darmstadt, Annual Report 1991 In all cases, the name of the company, the kind of document and the publication year are given. Very often, one gets such a document only from the company. Look up in CLICAPS (text books). If not available, then send a request to the company.
Conference reports Proc. Int. Congr. Catal.,3rd 1964 (publ. 1965) Proc. designates Proceedings. If a particular paper of a congress is to be cited, then the authors' names and the page numbers should also be given. Look up in CLICAPS (text books). Only the proceedings' title, but not the individual titles for papers can be searched. The Information Center has a selective collection of conference reports. These reports generally have an editor (Ed.).

Only the editor and the leaf number to be consulted are given. Look for the editor in CLICAPS (journals or text books). Attention: The data collection may be available in printed form or on CD . For CD version please contact the librarian.
Diploma theses Brunner A.P. Diplomarbeit, ETH Zürich 1992 Contains the name of the author, but not the title of the institute where the work was done. The research group can usually be traced by means of the subject. Please contact the group. The Information Center has an incomplet set of holdings that can be searched in
CLICAPS (text books). Research groups and their addresses.
DOI (Digital Object Identifier) 10.1021/ja027155m prefix/suffix
The prefix ist in two parts:
directory.registrant
The suffix is freely chosen by the publisher.
Using http://dx.doi.org/{DOI} one can access directly the document. In the URL, replace the placeholder {DOI} by the DOI value.
Encyclopedias/Dictionaries

As a rule designated according to the original editors. The title is usually missing. Edition, volume and page numbers follow the title. Complete series: Search in CLICAPS (Journals/Series) using the name of the encyclopedia.
Single volumes: Search in CLICAPS (text books).
Journals, Advances / Proceedings Appelman, E.H.; Basile, L.J.; Thompson, R.C. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1979, 101, 3384-3386 Form: Author ; title of the journal (italic), year, volume, pages from…to The procedure is done in two steps:
  1. Search for the journal title in CLICAPS (journals/series). Search non-familiar abbreviations in the abbreviations database
  2. Then located the article in the journal according to the year, volume, issue, and page information
Lecture notes Müller Klaus, Organische Chemie für Biologen, Skript, 1979, p. 155 ff. Lecture notes encompass written material according to the subject syllabus. Name of the lecturer, publication year and topic of the lecture are given. Normally the lecture notes are available from the secretariat of the lecturer. Copies are seldom available in the library. For the addresses and phone numbers of the lecturers consult the ETH phonebook.
Monographs Tietze, L.F.; Eicher, T. Reaktionen und Synthesen im organisch-chemischen Praktikum, Thieme: Stuttgart, New York, 1981; p. 387 Typical distinguishing marks: The title is not in italics, but the publisher is quoted. Search in CLICAPS (text books).
Non-books Beilstein Current Facts in Chemistry Q.III/1991 (CD Version) The information mediumis not paper. Search in CLICAPS (Text books or journals/series).
Norms, Standards DIN 7723 (Oct. 1971) DIN = Deutsches Institut für Normung. The number is alloted sequentially. The year and the month inform the user about the update of the norm.

The information center possesses only a few DIN and ASTM norms. For ETH members we recommend the Perinorm database.
It's not allowed to copy the norms, instead they have to be bought.

Patents Cumming, W.J., Polaroid Corp., U.S. Patent 4 634 773, 1987; Chem. Abstr., 1987, 106, 139831x. Form: Inventor, patent owner (assignee), country and patent no., date of patent, Chemical Abstracts record. On the basis of the abstract in Chemical Abstracts, decide if it is possible to order the patent. Patents can be downloaded page by page from the patent server of the European Patent Office. We offer the downloading as a library service.

Only the person to be contacted is given, followed by the note «Personal Communication» or «To be published» In case of a very old citation, a publication might have appeared in the mean time. Search in «Chemical Abstracts» (database search in SciFinder Scholar or CA on CD).
Ph.D. theses Brossi Marco, Diss. ETH No. 8191, Zürich, 1986 Contains keywords «Diss.», «B.A. Thesis», «M.S. Thesis», «Prom.» or similar. 1. Search in CLICAPS (for "ETH Diss")
2. Search in NEBIS
Reference to Chemical Abstracts Shishido, Masahiko. Kobunshi Kako, 1991, 40 (12), 587-594 (Japan), Chem. Abstr. 1992, 117, 8374e. Citation contains Chem. Abstr., pertinent year (bold), volume no. and abstract no. The author used only the information from Chemical Abstracts entry, but not the original source. Look for the corresponding abstract number in the quoted volume of Chemical abstract (database search in SciFinder Scholar or CA on CD).
Reports Dohrty, N.M., NTIS Report, 1991, AFOSR-TR-91-0178; Order No. AD-A232949 Contains the keyword «Report» and «Order No.». Reports are available in the ETH library in the Report-Sammlung section (Room HG H24, order by using the order no.). Printed reports are list in the NEBIS catalog starting from 1976. Reports in mikro-fiche form are not included.
Research reports Fb NRW 2100 (1970)
=Foschungsberichte des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, Opladen : west german publisher since 1952 (here issue 2100, 1970)
Fb stands for research report. Similarly, the other names, such as institution etc., are given in abbreviated form. Look up in CLICAPS (text books). We only have a few of them, so search also in NEBIS.
Spectra collections Sadtler, NMR No. 1200 An extensive spectra collection: Here the citation refers to the NMR spectrum number 1200 in the Sadtler Standard Spectra. Search for Sadtler in CLICAPS (text books or journals/series).
Supplementary Materials Krishnan Raghavachari ; Celeste McMichael Rohlfing, J. Phys. Chem., 1992, Vol. 96(6), p. 2463-2466, Supplementary Material

Supp. Materials must be ordered with the publisher using the order number given at the end of the article. For the given example the number is: 0022-3654/922096-2463.

Supplementary materials are also available online for certain journals.

Order with the publisher and enclose a cheque.
